Occupation: Commissioner/Retired Police
Hello, I am Fredrick Sykes, former Mayor of West Covina, Member of the L.A. County Commission on Human Relations, Member of the Mt. S.A.C. Civilian Oversight Committee and Retired L.A. County Deputy Sheriff.
I first came to office during the Great Recession. I inherited a crisis: million-dollar deficits, reduced staffing, and proposals to sell public land.
Today, those problems have returned. West Covina is again running deficits while spending on an unnecessary City health department, subsidizing a frequently closed Sportsplex, and losing employees to a toxic environment. Corruption and fraud have again placed City assets at risk of sale.
The years I served on the Council were a time of recovery and stability, when many of you chose to build a life here and raise your children. Together, we saved Shadow Oak Park, restored staffing, and brought discipline back to the budget. We didn't impose burdens like weekly street-sweeping parking restrictions. Instead, we created an environment where businesses like Porto's saw West Covina as a jewel.
I ask for your support to get back to basics, bring stability to City Hall and put the City back to working for the residents as it did when I was a member of the West Covina City Council.
